Leading Edge - 76 Fly - 77 The flag is constructed of one layer of blue silk with a 33" x 31" WV state seal painted on the center. The seal consists of two figures on either side of a rock. The figure on the left is holding a plow while the figure on the right is holding a pick. In between the two man is a rock with the date "JUNE 26, 1863" painted on it. Below the rock is a pink colored ribbon with the motto "MONTANI/SEMPER/LIBERTUS" painted on it with red pigment. Below the ribbon are crossed rifles with a red liberty cap. The painting is classically executed. Underneath the seal is a 3.375" red ribbon with the unit designation "17th.REG.WEST VAL. INFANTRY." applied with gold leaf. Around the seal, applied with gold leaf letters, are battle honors with the name and date of the battle. There are two rows with four honors across the top, a slanted honor on each side of the seal and two rows with three honors across the bottom fly. The leading edge of the fly is turned to the reverse to form a pole sleeve with a cotton lining. The perimeter of the fly is trimmed with a 3.5" knotted white silk fringe. |
